Conditions We Treat

Herniated and Bulging Discs

A herniated or bulging disc happens when the cushion between two vertebrae is irritated or pushes outward, sometimes pressing on a nerve. We use gentle decompression, movement retraining and core control to reduce pain and help the disc and nerve settle.

What Are Herniated and Bulging Discs?

Spinal discs act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae. Repeated bending, lifting, sitting or a sudden strain can irritate a disc or cause it to bulge. Many disc problems improve with the right conservative care, especially when the movements and habits that overload the disc are changed.

Common Symptoms

  • Low back or neck pain, often worse with sitting or bending
  • Pain, tingling or numbness into the arm or leg
  • Muscle spasm and stiffness
  • Pain with coughing or sneezing
  • Weakness in the arm or leg

Common Contributing Factors

  • Repetitive bending and lifting with a rounded spine
  • Long periods of sitting
  • Weak core control
  • Age-related disc changes
  • Sudden strain or injury

When to Seek Medical Care Right Away

Seek emergency care for loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin, or rapidly worsening weakness.

How We Approach Herniated and Bulging Discs

We listen to how your symptoms behave through the day, then test which positions and movements centralize or worsen them. Treatment starts with calming the disc and nerve, then gradually rebuilds hinge, squat and lifting patterns with constant core activation so the disc is protected during daily life.

  • Restoring the movements you use every day. We retrain bending, lifting, sitting for long periods and getting out of bed, so progress shows up in your real life, not just on the treatment table.
  • Constant core activation. Bracing the core and moving from the hips so the spine stays in a protected position under load.
  • Proper functional movement patterns. We coach how you hinge, squat, push, pull, carry, step and rotate, so load is shared across the whole body instead of piling up in one area.
  • Proper respiratory mechanics. Coordinating breath with bracing so you can lift without holding your breath or straining.
  • Looking past the symptoms. Especially with severe or long-standing problems, we take the time to consider every potential cause, including sitting time, lifting habits, hip mobility and earlier back episodes.
  • A plan built for you. Nobody is built the same or has been through the same things, so no two treatment plans are alike. Your plan is shaped around your history, your goals and how you respond.

How Our Services Help

Chiropractic Care

Flexion-distraction gently decompresses the disc and is a cornerstone of Dr. Vickers' disc care, combined with mobilization of stiff segments.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy uses directional exercise, nerve mobility and progressive core and hip strengthening to restore confidence with bending and lifting.

Massage Therapy

Massage eases protective muscle spasm around the spine and hips.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture may reduce pain and muscle guarding while the disc settles.

Most plans combine two or more of these services, chosen together with you, and your providers share one plan so every visit builds on the last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a herniated disc heal without surgery?

Many disc herniations improve with conservative care over time. We monitor your progress and will refer you if symptoms are not improving or worsen.

What should I avoid with a bulging disc?

Early on, long sitting and repeated bending often aggravate symptoms. We will give you specific positions and movements that help.

Is flexion-distraction safe?

It is a gentle, controlled technique. We confirm it suits you during your exam and adjust as you respond.

Do I need a referral, and do you take insurance?

No referral is needed. We accept health insurance as an out-of-network provider, as well as auto insurance claims and workers’ compensation claims, and every service can also be paid directly or through a monthly membership. Call (303) 465-6332 or request a free consultation to get started.
