What Is Hip Pain and Bursitis?

Hip pain can come from the joint itself, the tendons and bursa on the outside of the hip, or be referred from the low back. Weak glutes, stiff hips and how we stand and walk all affect how much load the hip takes.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain on the outside of the hip, worse lying on that side
  • Groin or front-of-hip pain
  • Pain with stairs, walking or getting out of a car
  • Stiffness after sitting
  • Limping

Common Contributing Factors

  • Weak glute muscles
  • Standing with weight on one hip
  • Running or long walks
  • Hip arthritis
  • Low back problems

When to Seek Medical Care Right Away

Seek urgent care for hip pain after a fall, inability to bear weight, or hip pain with fever.

How We Approach Hip Pain and Bursitis

We listen to what your hip stops you doing and examine the hip, low back, knee and foot together. Care reduces irritation, then rebuilds hip strength and single-leg control for stairs, walking and sport.

  • Restoring the movements you use every day. We retrain walking, climbing stairs, getting in and out of the car and standing on one leg, so progress shows up in your real life, not just on the treatment table.
  • Constant core activation. Linking core and glute activation so the pelvis stays level as you walk.
  • Proper functional movement patterns. We coach how you hinge, squat, push, pull, carry, step and rotate, so load is shared across the whole body instead of piling up in one area.
  • Proper respiratory mechanics. Breathing that supports core engagement during single-leg work.
  • Looking past the symptoms. Especially with severe or long-standing problems, we take the time to consider every potential cause, including low back function, gait, footwear, standing habits and sport.
  • A plan built for you. Nobody is built the same or has been through the same things, so no two treatment plans are alike. Your plan is shaped around your history, your goals and how you respond.

How Our Services Help

Chiropractic Care

Mobilization of the hip, pelvis and low back restores motion.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy strengthens the glutes and hip stabilizers and retrains gait; dry needling can release irritated tissues.

Massage Therapy

Massage relieves tension in the IT band, hip flexors and glutes.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture may ease hip pain and inflammation.

Most plans combine two or more of these services, chosen together with you, and your providers share one plan so every visit builds on the last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hip bursitis the same as hip arthritis?

No. Bursitis affects soft tissues on the outside of the hip; arthritis affects the joint. Your exam helps tell them apart.

Should I stop walking?

Usually not completely. We'll adjust how much and how you walk while you heal.

Can my back cause hip pain?

Yes. We always check the low back.

Do I need a referral, and do you take insurance?

No referral is needed. We accept health insurance as an out-of-network provider, as well as auto insurance claims and workers’ compensation claims, and every service can also be paid directly or through a monthly membership. Call (303) 465-6332 or request a free consultation to get started.
