Conditions We Treat

Rotator Cuff Injuries and Shoulder Impingement

Rotator cuff injuries and shoulder impingement cause pain when lifting the arm, reaching overhead or sleeping on the shoulder. We restore shoulder-blade, rib and mid-back motion and rebuild rotator cuff strength so the shoulder moves freely.

What Are Rotator Cuff Injuries and Shoulder Impingement?

The rotator cuff muscles keep the ball of the shoulder centered in its socket. When the shoulder blade, mid-back or ribs do not move well, or the cuff is weak or irritated, the tendons can become pinched and painful.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain lifting the arm or reaching overhead
  • Pain sleeping on the shoulder
  • Weakness lifting or carrying
  • Clicking or catching
  • Pain reaching behind the back

Common Contributing Factors

  • Repetitive overhead work or sports
  • Poor shoulder-blade control
  • Stiff mid-back and ribs
  • Age-related tendon changes
  • Falls or sudden strain

When to Seek Medical Care Right Away

Seek prompt medical care for sudden inability to lift the arm after a fall or injury.

How We Approach Rotator Cuff Injuries and Shoulder Impingement

We listen to the activities you're missing, from golf to lifting your grandkids, then assess the whole chain: neck, mid-back, ribs, shoulder blade and cuff. Care follows our three-step shoulder plan: restore mobility, rebuild coordination, then progress strength for real life.

  • Restoring the movements you use every day. We retrain reaching overhead, lifting, carrying, getting dressed and sleeping on your side, so progress shows up in your real life, not just on the treatment table.
  • Constant core activation. Core and rib cage stability so the shoulder works from a stable base.
  • Proper functional movement patterns. We coach how you hinge, squat, push, pull, carry, step and rotate, so load is shared across the whole body instead of piling up in one area.
  • Proper respiratory mechanics. Rib expansion and breathing that improve mid-back motion and shoulder mechanics.
  • Looking past the symptoms. Especially with severe or long-standing problems, we take the time to consider every potential cause, including mid-back stiffness, posture, sport and work demands, and previous injuries.
  • A plan built for you. Nobody is built the same or has been through the same things, so no two treatment plans are alike. Your plan is shaped around your history, your goals and how you respond.

How Our Services Help

Chiropractic Care

Mobilization of the shoulder, ribs and mid-back restores motion; Dr. Vickers also uses soft-tissue work and taping.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy progresses rotator cuff and shoulder-blade strength, uses dry needling for trigger points and includes sport-specific drills.

Massage Therapy

Massage releases tight chest, upper back and cuff muscles.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can help with pain and sleep during recovery.

Most plans combine two or more of these services, chosen together with you, and your providers share one plan so every visit builds on the last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need surgery for a rotator cuff tear?

Many partial tears and impingement improve with rehab. We refer for imaging or a surgical opinion when appropriate.

Why does my shoulder hurt at night?

Lying on the shoulder compresses irritated tendons. We'll show you comfortable positions while it heals.

How long does shoulder rehab take?

Often several weeks to a few months, depending on the injury and your goals.

Do I need a referral, and do you take insurance?

No referral is needed. We accept health insurance as an out-of-network provider, as well as auto insurance claims and workers’ compensation claims, and every service can also be paid directly or through a monthly membership. Call (303) 465-6332 or request a free consultation to get started.
