Short answer: whiplash is a sprain or strain of the neck caused by a fast back-and-forth movement of the head, most often in a rear-end crash. Symptoms such as neck pain, stiffness and headaches often start 24 to 72 hours later. Most people improve with early, active care that restores movement, rather than long periods of rest.
In a collision, the body moves with the seat while the head lags behind and then snaps forward. That rapid motion can overstretch or irritate the muscles, ligaments, joints and nerves of the neck and upper back. It can happen even in a low-speed crash, and it can happen even when the car shows little damage.
Recovery varies. Many people improve over several weeks, while others have symptoms that last for months, especially when pain was severe from the start or care was delayed. Getting examined early and staying gently active are two of the best things you can do.
Call 911 or go to an emergency room for loss of consciousness, a severe or worsening headache, confusion, repeated vomiting, numbness or weakness in the arms or legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest or abdominal pain, trouble breathing or any suspected fracture.
